DESCRIPTION:\nThe ROAP EMEA Finals bring to a close our advanced remote oral advocacy and cross-examination courses, by featuring the most persuasive and skilled participants on each course.\n\n\n\nThis year’s edition of ROAP EMEA was dedicated to Lucy Greenwood.\n\n\n\nThe outcome of the finals will be determined by a panel of world-class arbitrators consisting of Lucy Greenwood (President), John Ohaga SC and Marieke van Hooijdonk.\n\n\n\nThe event will take place live online on 30 June 2026 from 2 pm to 5.40 pm CEST. She has practised international arbitration since 1998 and has acted as arbitrator in over 110 arbitrations since becoming a full-time arbitrator in 2017.  She is highly regarded for her prompt, efficient resolution of disputes and active case management of arbitrations.  She is a Chartered Arbitrator, a Member of the State Bar of Texas and a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales. \n\n\n\nLucy was shortlisted by Legal 500 for the “Arbitrator of the Year” Award 2023 and nominated for the GAR Award for Best Prepared/Most Responsive Arbitrator 2025. As an energy specialist, her extensive experience includes: gas pricing disputes, heavy oil, LNG, renewables technologies, delay and liquidated damages, joint operating agreements, energy exploration including ultra deepwater and FPSOs, fracking and rig lease agreements, environmental issues, land-based and offshore drilling rig services, construction, completion certificates, power projects, and mines. \n\n\n\nShe has also arbitrated disputes over taxation, performance bonds/guarantees, sports licensing, royalty obligations, software licenses, IT patent licensing, software, blockchain, friction materials, ferroalloys, polyethylene tubing, joint ventures, IP media rights, loan agreements, hotels and leisure and telecommunications. \n\n\n\nLucy Greenwood is listed on all major arbitration institution panels. She is a Trustee of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, Past Chair, International Committee, Dispute Resolution Section, American Bar Association, Past Chair, North America Branch of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and a Fellow of the College of Commercial Arbitrators.\n\n\n\nJohn Ohaga SC has 34 years of dispute experience and is an acknowledged expert in high-stakes domestic and international cases. His broad practice focuses on banking, finance, technology, procurement, energy, and commercial. He is a Chartered Arbitrator, an accredited mediator, and a member of the governing board of the International Council for Commercial Arbitration.\n\n\n\nJohn is ranked in Band 1: Dispute Resolution in Band 1: Arbitrator by Chambers & Partners. In addition, he has been featured as one of the Top 50 Arbitrators in Africa by Legal 500: Arbitration Powerlist and the Africa Arbitration Academy. He sits on boards and committees of several arbitration organisations. These include a role as the Chairperson of the National Steering Committee for Formulation of the ADR Policy. Kenya has nominated him to the ICSID Panel of Arbitrators and Mediators and the ICC Commission on Arbitration.\n\n\n\nHe has advised multinational companies, blue-chip companies listed on the Nairobi Securities Exchange, and various other private companies besides Kenya’s largest state corporations. In addition, he has provided expert opinions and appeared as an expert witness on Kenyan law before the courts of England and Wales and the United States of America.\n\n\n\nHe also served on the inaugural board of the Nairobi Centre for International Arbitration for eight years. He is also the Convenor of the Law Society of Kenya’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee and a member of the Mediation Accreditation Committee and the Judiciary Task Force on Court-Annexed Mediation. In 2013, he was appointed the Chairman of the Kenya Sports Disputes Tribunal.\n\n\n\nHe sits on the boards of several companies, is a Trustee of the M-PESA Foundation, and is a director of the M-PESA Foundation Academy, which aims to provide a world-class education to gifted but economically disadvantaged students from across Kenya.\n\n\n\nMarieke van Hooijdonk is an independent arbitrator with over 30 years’ experience in international arbitration under a variety of rules (including ICC, LCIA, NAI, and SCC), seats and applicable laws.\n\n\n\nMarieke’s extensive experience spans the commercial and corporate spectrum across a wide range of industries (energy, pharmaceuticals, manufacturing) with particular focus on M&A and joint ventures disputes, distribution and franchising, sale of goods and general contract law.\n\n\n\nPrior to founding her independent practice, Marieke was a partner at Allen & Overy / A&O Shearman, where she headed the Arbitration Group in Amsterdam. She specialised in international arbitration and arbitration-related court litigation and was recognised in the Legal 500 Hall of Fame, ranked Band 1 for Arbitration by Chambers Europe, and named a Thought Leader by Who’s Who’s Legal Arbitration. In 2025, Marieke chose to focus exclusively on her work as an international arbitrator.\n\n\n\nIn addition to her arbitrator work, Marieke serves as Vice-President of the ICC International Court of Arbitration and as a member of the ICC Nominations Commission for the Netherlands. From 2014 to 2021, she was the Dutch member of the ICC International Court of Arbitration.\n\n\n\nMarieke also serves as a deputy judge at the Court of Appeal in Arnhem-Leeuwarden.\n\n\n\nMarieke has law degrees from Columbia Law School in New York (LL.M.) and the University of Amsterdam.
